FDA Authorizes First-Ever Crispr Application For COVID-19 Coronavirus Test

'The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted its first-ever emergency use authorization for the gene-editing technology Crispr on Thursday, greenlighting a coronavirus diagnostic test developed by Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Sherlock Biosciences. The test can determine whether a patient sample contains the virus that causes COVID-19 in about an hour.

“Crispr is ready and has come of age,” says Rahul Dhanda, Sherlock’s president and CEO, reflecting on the announcement. “Not only are we validating and first to prove Crispr’s capabilities of any therapeutic or diagnostic company, but it's also addressing one of the greatest healthcare issues to emerge in our lifetime.”....

New Data From First Human Crispr Trials Shows Promising Results

"Results from clinical trials released Tuesday indicate that two patients, one with beta thalassemia and one with sickle cell disease, have potentially been cured of their diseases. The two trials, which involved using Crispr to edit the genes of the patients in question, were jointly conducted by Vertex Pharmaceuticals and CRISPR Therapeutics..."

1.  CRISPR

Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) is the most advanced gene-editing technology yet. It works by harnessing the natural mechanisms of the immune systems of bacterium cells of invading viruses, which is then able to ‘cut out’ infected DNA strands. This cutting of DNA is what has the power to potentially transform the way we treat disease. By modifying genes, some of the biggest threats to our health, like cancer and HIV, could potentially be overcome in a matter of years.

However, as with all powerful tools there are several controversies surrounding its widespread use, mostly over humanity’s right to ‘play God’ and worries over gene-editing being used to produce hordes of designer babies. CRISPR is still a first-generation tool and its full capabilities are not yet understood.

CRISP·R

/ˈkrispər/

noun

BIOCHEMISTRY

noun: CRISPR; plural noun: CRISPRs

1. a segment of DNA containing short repetitions of base sequences, involved in the defense mechanisms of prokaryotic organisms to viruses.

2. a genetic engineering tool that uses a CRISPR sequence of DNA and its associated protein to edit the base pairs of a gene.

"using the genome editing tool known as CRISPR, researchers were able to selectively silence two genes in human papillomavirus"

Early 21st century: short for clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat .

CRISPR Gene Editing

CRISPR gene editing is a genetic engineering technique in molecular biology by which the genomes of living organisms may be modified. It is based on a simplified version of the bacterial CRISPR-Cas9 antiviral defense system.
